Carolyn C. Carpenter, MHA, FACHE, is the President of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a large 525-bed destination medical center in Norfolk, Virginia.
Carolyn joined Sentara Healthcare in September 2017 as the Chief Operating Officer of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Carolyn quickly demonstrated her capabilities as a seasoned leader who strives for clinical excellence, building positive relationships and achieving ambitious goals.
Prior to joining Sentara, Carolyn enjoyed a successful 20-year career with Duke University Health System. At Duke, she held a number of roles including Chief Operating Officer for the system’s flagship, Duke University Hospital, Associate Dean and Administrator for the Duke Cancer Institute and as an Associate Vice President of Duke Health.
Carolyn is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and was twice the recipient of the ACHE Early Career Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award. Carolyn has received several leadership awards and recognitions during her tenure at Duke, and was also one of fifteen inaugural fellows in the Carol Emmott Fellowship, a national leadership fellowship for exceptional women leaders in health. She previously served on the Board of Directors for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, NC Hospital Association Political Action Committee and the Susan G. Koman North Carolina Affiliate.
Carolyn received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia. Carolyn completed her administrative fellowship at Duke University Health System and joined the faculty team shortly after.
Carolyn and her husband, Bill, a 5th generation Virginian, enjoy living in the Commonwealth with their two daughters.
