Prior Experience
Bernie has over 20 years of leadership experience as President/Chief Executive Officer of multiple hospitals in Virginia, New Hampshire, and Texas in both investor-owned and not-for-profit multi-hospital, integrated health care delivery systems. Before his management of SMJH, Bernie managed Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH) as the president.
Under Bernie’s leadership, SVBGH achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center and completed a $54 million expansion of Surgical Services and the opening of a new Intensive Care Unit. His Sentara system level responsibilities have included leadership of the Surgical Services High Performance Team, Surgical Robotics Optimization, Patient Experience, and Behavioral Health Services.
From 1996 to 2012, Bernie served in several senior executive leadership roles with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).
Prior to joining Sentara Health, he served as the Chief Executive Officer for HCA Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, a 331-bed acute care facility within the Methodist Healthcare System in San Antonio, Texas.
