Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, Virginia has resumed interventional cardiology services, bringing advanced, life-saving cardiac procedures back to Halifax County and the Southern Virginia region.

This service demonstrates Sentara’s continuing investment in clinical programs and reinforces its mission to improve health every day.

Interventional cardiology includes minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty and stent placement, which are vital for patients with chronic heart conditions.

Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital is reinstating these services due to recent assessments showing a rising demand for accessible, high-quality heart care in the Southern Virginia region. By providing these services, Sentara is ensuring that area residents will have immediate local access to advanced cardiac care.

“Reinstating interventional cardiology is about more than restoring a service—it is about restoring peace of mind,” said Sherri Bee, operations director of cardiology services at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital.

“Patients deserve timely access to specialized care without having to leave Halifax County. The return of these services allows patients to receive lifesaving treatments close to home, supported by their families.”

The successful relaunch of interventional cardiology comes from a new partnership between Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital and VitalSolution, a specialty clinical services provider.

"I value the excellent working relationship I have formed with Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital’s Heart & Vascular Center,” said Dr. Walid Hassan, board certified interventional cardiologist with VitalSolution. “I look forward to providing the highest standard of care and state-of-the-art cardiovascular and endovascular interventions for our patients.”

Patients with cardiac emergencies may still require transfer to hospitals with a higher level of care. But the availability of scheduled procedures locally will allow most heart patients in the Halifax County region to receive advanced cardiac treatment closer to home.

“Interventional cardiology is an investment in the long-term health and vitality of our region,” said David Masterson, president of Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. “It ensures that patients across Southern Virginia have convenient access to exceptional cardiac care with the same high standards and clinical expertise throughout the Sentara system.”

According to the American College of Cardiology, rural communities face significant barriers to heart care, with fewer than half of rural hospitals able to provide catheterizations or interventional cardiology services.

Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital joins a growing number of community hospitals working to close that gap.
