Seven Sentara hospitals earn ‘A’ safety grade from Leapfrog Group
Seven Sentara hospitals have earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit organization focused on patient safety. These hospitals are:
- Sentara CarePlex Hospital – Hampton, Virginia
- Sentara Halifax Hospital – South Boston, Virginia
- Sentara Leigh Hospital – Norfolk, Virginia
- Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center – Woodbridge, Virginia
- Sentara Princess Anne Hospital – Virginia Beach, Virginia
- Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital - Virginia Beach, Virginia
- Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center – Williamsburg, Virginia
In Virginia, only 33 hospitals achieved an “A” grade, and seven of them are Sentara hospitals. Less than 30% of hospitals nationwide received an “A”. The most common grade is a “C”.
Three Sentara hospitals—Sentara CarePlex Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital—have maintained the elite “Straight A” designation, meaning they have earned an “A” grade in at least five consecutive cycles of the Hospital Safety Grade.
Two hospitals, Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital, are among just 11 hospitals in the nation, and just three in Virginia, that have earned 26 consecutive “A” grades since the program launched in 2012.
Sentara Health the only health system in the country with two hospitals on the list of all-time Straight A hospitals.
Leapfrog evaluates more than 3,000 hospitals nationwide and assigns a letter grade based on over 30 patient safety indicators reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
