Sentara Health Plans names new president
Sentara Health Plans (SHP) announced today that Colin Drozdowski has been named President of SHP and Executive Vice President, Sentara Healthcare, effective September 1, 2022. Drozdowski currently serves as Senior Vice President of Comprehensive Health Solutions at SHP and has served as a senior vice president of SHP since 2019. Drozdowski succeeds Dennis Matheis, current President and CEO of SHP, who transitions to President and CEO of Sentara Healthcare on September 1, 2022.
“Colin is a growth-oriented and people-focused leader whose vision and commitments align with the future of our health system,” Dennis Matheis says. “He values innovation and has demonstrated his ability to effectively lead change throughout his time as Senior Vice President at the health plan. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Colin as the new leader of the health plan.”
Among Colin’s top accomplishments is his involvement in helping to bring Virginia Premier into Sentara Health Plans, which is the largest transaction in Sentara’s history. Together under Sentara Health Plans, Optima Health and Virginia Premier serve more than 950,000 members and partner with 25,000+ physicians and more than 100 hospitals. He has led a shift to value-based care, built strong provider relationships and made significant improvements to increase efficiency, enhance the member and provider experience, and leverage the unique capabilities that set Sentara apart as an integrated delivery system.
Prior to Sentara, Drozdowski spent 26 years with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield system, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Provider Solutions for Anthem, Inc. In that role, he oversaw roughly 2,500 associates nationwide. His team supported all Anthem lines of business including Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial, and all markets, covering 40+ million members.
“I am humbled and excited to transition to the role of President of Sentara Health Plans,” Drozdowski says. “I am honored to lead such a talented and dedicated team and look forward to growing together and delivering high quality service and care to our members and the communities we serve.”
Drozdowski earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Hiram College, and a master’s degree in Economics from Cleveland State University. He serves on the Board of Directors of CareATC, a population health management company that partners with employers and empowers employees to live healthier lives and Fit4Kids, a community coalition in Richmond that works to prevent and reduce childhood obesity.
Colin and his wife of 30 years, Angela, have lived in Virginia for the past 22 years. They have three grown children and are active in their church community. In their spare time, they enjoy all that Virginia has to offer.
