All 12 Sentara hospitals have earned the American College of Cardiology's NCDR Chest Pain - MI Registry Performance Achievement Award for 2026. This recognition is reserved for hospitals that meet aggressive national benchmarks in heart attack care and demonstrate a sustained commitment to treating patients at the highest standard.
11 Sentara hospitals were recognized by the AHA for providing outstanding stroke care throughout Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Each hospital earned a Gold Plus award for sustained excellence in stroke care, consistently following the latest stroke treatment guidelines and achieving positive patient outcomes for two or more consecutive calendar years. In addition, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center received the Rural Stroke Silver award, recognizing rural hospitals that meet program standards for four consecutive quarters, or one full year. These awards aim to address disparities in healthcare outcomes, as rural populations face higher risks of stroke mortality and heart disease compared to urban populations.
Eight Sentara hospitals have earned either a 5-star rating or a 4-star rating from the 2026 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating. The national average among all rated hospitals is three stars.
All Sentara hospitals have earned DNV Accreditation, which upholds regulatory requirements for hospitals, such as US Government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), and provides guidance and best practices for clinical specialty organizations across healthcare.

Healthgrades has given 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Awards to five Sentara hospitals, putting them in the top 10% nationwide for patient safety.

In addition to receiving Patient Safety Excellence Awards, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital received an America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgery Award from Healthgrades, and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital received Outstanding Patient Experience Awards.

Gold star graphic labeled '2024 Health Quality Innovator,' symbolizing recognition for excellence, innovation, and leadership in advancing healthcare quality.Health Quality Innovators named Sentara Health a 2024 Health Quality Innovator of the Year. This prestigious annual award program recognizes and celebrates organizations that are using successful, evidence-based approaches to improve health care quality and outcomes.

Through the work of Sentara’s Diversity & Inclusion department, all of our hospitals have received the High Performer designation for 2026 from the Human Rights Campaign, a nationwide organization working to achieve quality and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community.

Top 15 Health System, IBM Watson Health (2021, 2018)

All Sentara Cardiology Specialist locations are accredited by the IAC Echocardiology program. IAC accreditation is the 'gold standard' in the field of echocardiography and ensures the highest level of patient care and safety is maintained at these locations.

Five locations have earned the Silver 25-Year Milestone Award: Sentara Heart Hospital and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital, and Sentara Cardiology Specialists - Kempsville.

Eight Sentara Hospitals received an “A” grade in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2026 Safety Grades, achieving recognition for providing safe, exceptional patient care. Sentara Leigh Hospital and Sentara CarePlex Hospital were two of just 11 U.S. hospitals with 28 consecutive “A”s from Leapfrog.
11 Sentara hospitals earned an "A" grade for social responsibility on the 2026-27 Lown Institute Hospitals Index. Sentara Health was also recognized for outstanding social responsibility and ranked in the top 10 in the nation for patient outcomes.

Eleven Sentara hospitals have earned Magnet Recognition Program designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Four hospitals have earned Magnet with Distinction, which recognizes organizations that exceed Magnet’s already rigorous performance benchmarks.

In 2026, U.S. News & World Report has ranked eight Sentara hospitals across multiple “Best Hospital” categories and given them recognition as “High Performing” in several specialties, procedures, and conditions. Read more about how Sentara hospitals ranked best.

In 2025, six Sentara hospitals were named among the nation's best for high-quality labor and delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies. In addition, four Sentara hospitals were named Maternity Access Hospitals, which recognizes hospitals that provide maternity care services in areas that would otherwise have none.

Sentara has consistently earned recognition from U.S. News for more than 20 consecutive years.
