Gene H. Burke, M.D., vice president and executive medical director for clinical effectiveness at Sentara Healthcare, is responsible for clinical quality and patient safety programs across Sentara.

Improvements obtained under his leadership include reduced mortality, reduced avoidable readmissions, reduced events of harm including healthcare-associated infections, improved access to ambulatory services, improved emergency department throughput, and increased use of hospice. Previously, he was the vice president for medical affairs of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he served as a leader in clinical quality and safety.

While a practicing clinician of pulmonary and critical care medicine, he led the initiative to make the critical care units safer and more efficient by the development and implementation of the nation’s first operational electronic ICU.

Dr. Burke received his M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1975, completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Virginia in 1978, and completed his pulmonary fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in 1980.
