On Sept. 23, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center will host an event to celebrate nurses, featuring an address by Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott.

Heather, who lost her leg in the attack, will share her story of overcoming adversity and the powerful role of nurses in patient healing – not just physical, but emotional and mental healing as well. This event celebrates the nursing profession and the profound impact that nurses have on the lives of countless patients and families each day. Nurses in attendance will also have the opportunity to ask questions about Heather’s experience and mingle with one another at the event, while enjoying light refreshments.

“We are thrilled to have this unique opportunity to celebrate our nurses, the nursing profession and all healthcare workers through Heather’s inspiring story,” said Jane Velarde with Human Resources for Sentara Healthcare. “We hope this event will help to recognize the great work that our nurses – and all nurses – do and encourage others to join this influential and noble profession.”

The event is reserved for Sentara nurses and their guests. Nurses in the community who are interested in attending this event may contact Joyce Loporto at Jaloport@sentara.com.
