Sentara Healthcare recently congratulated six of our leaders for being recognized by Inside Business as 2016 Healthcare Heroes. 

The awards honor top healthcare professionals in Hampton Roads that have improved the quality of life for patients across the region and, in some cases, our nation. Sentara winners include:

Carrie Hart, Director of Sentara Pediatric Physicians, Sentara Medical Group:  Recognized in the Innovations in Healthcare Delivery category, Hart champions early access to comprehensive, quality health care services.  At Sentara Medical Group, she leads Project Connect, an organization that enables local outreach efforts to help families enroll in Virginia’s state-sponsored health insurance program – Family Access to Medical Insurance Security – which provides free or affordable health insurance to children up to 19 years old and pregnant mothers.

Deborah Morris, Palliative Care Physician, Sentara, and Assistant professor, Eastern Virginia Medical School: Recognized in the Physician-Palliative Care category, Morris created the Caring About Residents’ Experiences and Symptoms (C.A.R.E.S.) Program at Sentara Newtown Nursing and Rehabilitation to improve the quality of palliative care available in Hampton Roads. Through C.A.R.E.S., she has worked with 170 patients to determine their goals of care and to provide symptom management for those in long-term care. 

Jennifer Ward, Thoracic Oncology Nurse Practitioner, Sentara Cancer Network: Recognized in the Nurse Practitioner category, Ward is a leader in providing comprehensive, compassionate and personalized care focused on patients and their families as they manage the physical, emotional and spiritual distress oftentimes associated with a cancer diagnosis.

Anna Kostic, Pharmacist, Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Sentara Medical Group/Sentara Health System: Recognized in the Pharmacist category, Kostic focuses not only on quality patient care, but also in improving the process, and has worked on multiple systemwide initiatives to improve patient care and standardize protocols to help streamline clinical processes.

Mark Sinesi, M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Eastern Virginia Medical School: Recognized in the Specialist – Radiation Oncology category, Sinesi is committed to providing excellent patient care and communication.  Further, he is dedicated to program development having introduced many high-technology, high-precision programs that deliver potentially lifesaving treatments to patients, including one that gave five-day breast cancer treatments to patients.

Augusta Baines, Sentara volunteer:  Recognized in the Volunteer-Individual category, Baines has served as a relief caretaker and volunteer in the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program at the Sentara Nursing Center in Portsmouth for more than 18 years – consistently offering support, friendship and encouragement to the staff and residents.

In addition to these outstanding Sentara leaders, the Foundation for Rehabilitation Equipment and Endowment (F.R.E.E.) Foundation – led by its President and Sentara Patient Care Services Manager, Valeria Mitchell – was also recognized in the Community Service category for its work in providing 1,201 pieces of mobility equipment to 947 under-insured and uninsured individuals in South Hampton Roads over the past seven years.
