Sentara Edinburgh medical campus opens in Chesapeake
Sentara Family Medicine and Pediatrics practice is new care model
Sentara Healthcare has cut the ribbon on its Sentara Edinburgh outpatient campus in Chesapeake, Va.. Edinburgh is a fast-growing planned development in the southern portion of the city. The 60,000 square foot, two-story office building features Sentara Medical Group’s first practice combining Family Medicine and Pediatrics served by a blended care team. Sentara Cardiology Specialists will open their office this summer.
“We want to meet the community’s need for access to care as Chesapeake continues to grow,” said Thomas Thames, MD, president of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital and executive sponsor of the Sentara Edinburgh campus. “We think the combined family and pediatric practice we are piloting will be ideal for busy families.”
The combined practice will include innovative technology allowing self-check-in and self-rooming for patients, a system to assure timely care by providers and a design in which providers come to the patient for vitals, labs and all other services. The practice design allows adults and children to be seen during the same visit.
“My goal is to treat your children and family in the way that I’d want my family to be treated,” said pediatrician LaTonya Russell, MD, in prepared remarks. “My mission is to provide sound guidance and empower my patients to make good health decisions by fostering a strong partnership, and new technology will never change that.” Russell added that good health decisions include avoiding tobacco and alcohol.
“Chesapeake is an extremely big city,” City Councilman Lonnie Craig told Chesapeake City TV at the event. “We need health care services all over the city. They (Sentara) may offer some services not currently available, such as advanced kinds of imaging, and we’re happy to have a YMCA here at this site.”
Sentara Edinburgh was designed by Innovate Architecture of Portsmouth, Va. and built by Vannoy Construction of Charlotte, NC (Structure) and Compo Construction of Norfolk, Va. (Interior) Cost was approximately $19M.
