Sentara RMH Medical Group president to retire
John A. McGowan, M.D., president of Sentara RMH Medical Group will retire effective July 2016. The extended timeframe will allow the medical group, a team of 135 physicians and advance practice clinicians, sufficient time to select a new president and ensure smooth continuity of care among the group’s 23 clinics and medical practices.
McGowan has served as medical group president since its founding in 2010. From 2008 to 2012, he was employed as an inpatient physician (hospitalist) with Sentara RMH. Prior to that, he was a nephrologist (kidney specialist) on staff at Harrisonburg Medical Associates.
“Dr. McGowan has been an invaluable member of the SRMH senior leadership team. His extensive experience as a private practice physician prior to joining the medical group brought great insight into the important role of the medical group president,” said Jim Krauss, Sentara RMH Medical Center president.
Over the years, McGowan has served in various leadership roles in the local medical community — including chairman and president of RMH Medical Executive Committee, president of Harrisonburg Medical Associates and co-chairman and founding board member of Valley Health Plan.
“I want to thank all of those who have helped SRMG to grow and to advance in its efforts to provide exceptional healthcare in this community,” said McGowan. “I’m also thankful for the many wonderful experiences I’ve had working with my colleagues at Sentara RMH and Harrisonburg Medical Associates.”
In retirement McGowan plans to engage in volunteer activities, travel and spend more time with his wife, Beverly and three children, Sean, Kevin and Catherine.
Dr. McGowan graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in Little Rock, Ark. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in nephrology, at Presbyterian-University Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he remained on staff for two additional years prior to moving to Harrisonburg in 1987.
