The Sentara RMH Medical Center Bariatric Surgery team now offers ORBERA™, a safe, effective weight-loss solution recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to help adult patients living with obesity in losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight.

ORBERA has been available worldwide for about 20 years with significant weight-loss results. More than 220,000 ORBERA balloons have been distributed in more than 80 countries.

The ORBERA Managed Weight Loss System is a non-surgical, comprehensive two-part program for patients with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30-40 kg/m2.

It is used in conjunction with a long-term supervised diet and behavior modification program and intended for adults who have attempted more conservative weight reduction alternatives, but have been unable to lose weight and keep it off.

A soft silicone balloon is placed in the stomach for six months to encourage portion control. The balloon takes up space in the patient’s stomach, helping the patient eat smaller meals.

“Once patients start the program for balloon placement, they receive a customized plan and coaching from the bariatric team of experts, including a registered dietitian, nurse practitioner and the surgeon,” said Melissa Sikes, FNP-C, bariatric clinical navigator. “With ORBERA, people lost an average 3.1 times the weight patients lost with diet and exercise alone. We are hopeful the program will help patients create healthy diet and lifestyle modifications that will assist them in maintaining their weight loss over time. One major benefit of using the balloon is that the patient continues monthly visits with Lemma Brown, bariatric dietitian, for the six months after the balloon is removed to reinforce the new habits."

Sentara RMH Bariatric Surgery recognizes that obesity is a chronic disease, and we are pleased to offer new, minimally invasive solutions, like ORBERA, to help patients manage their disease before it progresses and requires more invasive treatment.

Candidates for ORBERA must be at least 18 years old, have a BMI of 30–40, and be willing to participate in a medically supervised weight-loss program.
