The World Health Organization calls antibiotic resistance a rising threat to public health. In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention report more than two million cases of antibiotic-resistant infections every year resulting in 23,000 deaths. Resistance results from inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics for conditions they cannot help, such as viruses instead of bacterial infections.

More than 1,000 providers associated with Sentara Medical Group practices, Sentara hospitals and the Sentara Quality Care Network are launching an awareness campaign around correct prescribing of antibiotics. The campaign is called ‘Antibiotics: They can cure. They can kill.’ Posters and brochures asking patients, “Do You Need An Antibiotic?” are being deployed across 200+ Sentara sites of care. The posters list common medical conditions that don’t improve with antibiotics and a shorter list of those that do. It reminds patients that inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to resistance when they really do need them.
