Optima Health and Bon Secours Mercy Health reach contract agreement

The following statement should be attributed to John Syer, Senior Vice President, Provider Networks, Sentara Health Plans
Optima Health is pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Bon Secours Mercy Health. This agreement ensures that Bon Secours Mercy Health hospitals and specialty centers in both Hampton Roads and Richmond remain in the Optima Health Network without disruption to our members.
Optima Health strives be a trusted partner with the individuals and communities we serve. As a Virginia-based, not-for-profit health plan, our goal is to deliver access to quality care, while keeping costs down for our members. We believe our new agreement with Bon Secours Mercy Health achieves this goal.
The revised agreement allows the continued access of care with Bon Secours Mercy Health for over 55,000 Virginians in our Optima Health government-supported and commercial group plans.
We look forward to our continued relationship with Bon Secours Mercy Health and our shared desire to provide top-notch, quality care to our Optima Health members.

Ohio-headquartered Bon Secours Mercy Health has issued a contract termination notice to Optima Health potentially reducing access to care for more than 54,000 Virginians.
On March 1, 2023, Bon Secours Mercy Health hospitals and specialists in Hampton Roads and Richmond will no longer be in the Optima Health Network. This pending termination impacts members on government-supported plans and commercial group plans of all sizes, including small businesses.
Despite our repeated efforts to negotiate in good faith, Bon Secours Mercy Health has demanded unreasonable contract terms that will significantly increase the cost of care for our members. We have tried to work with Bon Secours Mercy Health to create a pathway for continued access to care for members. As a Virginia-based health system, we take very seriously our not-for-profit responsibility to balance access to care and affordability on behalf of our Virginia members.
Amid rising economic concerns, this is a time when we should come together, not break apart.
We continue to work with Bon Secours to negotiate appropriate market pricing and should we reach an agreement with them soon, their hospitals and specialists will remain in-network and available. In the meantime, we are moving forward in communicating with our members and supporting them in transitioning care to other high-quality, affordable healthcare providers in the region.
