For 130 years, Sentara Healthcare has proudly lived its not-for-profit mission to improve health every day. The mission includes providing care to patients regardless of ability to pay, supporting medical education to ensure future providers and helping communities be healthier by preventing and managing chronic diseases.

Now, for the first time, Sentara documents the breadth and depth of its mission by publishing the Sentara Community Benefit Report. The report outlines total community Benefit of almost $365M in 2017, including more than $325M in uncompensated care for indigent or uninsured patients, $24.4M in education support for Eastern Virginia Medical School and $18.3M in community education programs and screening events across our system.

"The work that we do demonstrates that we care about our communities," says Sentara President & CEO Howard P. Kern. "We do not serve because we have to; we serve because it is part of our moral compass."

Community Benefit is the value of care and services beyond the theoretical taxes a for-profit company would pay. Sentara exceeds that figure by tens of millions of dollars every year. As a private, not-for-profit health system, all revenues after expenses are reinvested in improving access to care, new life-saving technologies, standard-of-care facilities and appropriate pay and benefits for our Members of the Team. Sentara adheres to a "Living Wage" philosophy on employee compensation for even entry-level positions. We maintain a positive, mutually-supportive workplace which encourages professional growth and retention of valued employees, who in turn contribute to their communities.

Sentara is also nationally-recognized by our peers and accreditors in safety, quality care and the patient experience.

"We not only care about the communities we live in, but we take action to make them healthier," says Henry U. "Sandy" Harris, III, Chair of the Sentara all-volunteer Board of Directors. "That's why I'm proud to be a part of Sentara."
