Sentara Heart Hospital provides patient data for IBM Watson
Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Va. contributed data from 3,000 heart echo-cardiology studies, 60% of which were used, to train Watson in the development of IBM Watson Imaging Clinical Review, the first application born in part from the Watson Health medical imaging collaborative. Sentara is among the first 24 health care institutions in the collaborative. The first application for the offering is cardiovascular disease, starting with a common condition called aortic stenosis (AS) which affects as many as 1.5 million Americans. AS occurs when the aortic valve in the heart is narrowed, impeding blood flow to the rest of the body and causing shortness of breath, tiredness, and chest pain.
Watson Imaging Clinical Review uses cognitive text analytics to read structured and unstructured information in a cardiologist’s medical reports, combines that with a variety of data from other sources and extracts relevant information to verify key data, including the diagnosis, is accurately reflected throughout the health record. Watson Imaging Clinical Review can identify discrepancies between the cardiologist's report and data that should carry through to other data sources like the EMR. Predictive modeling from these studies may help physicians identify patients who would benefit from early monitoring or intervention.
IBM plans to supplement the release of this offering with nine additional cardiovascular conditions, such as myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), valve disorders, cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle), and deep vein thrombosis.
