Gynecologic cancers are primarily treated in three ways: with medicine, with radiation and/or with surgery.
Your team of cancer physicians may include:
- Gynecologic oncologists: A gynecologic oncologist an obstetrician/gynecologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs. Specifically, the gynecologic oncologist treats cancer of the ovary, endometrium, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva. Gynecologic oncologists will perform surgery as appropriate as well as see the patient for any medical oncology needs, such as chemotherapy.
- Radiation oncologists: Physicians who specialize in treating cancer with radiation therapy, called radiation oncologists.
- Pathologists: Physicians who specialize in the diagnosis of disease, including cancer.
- Other specialists: These physicians collaborate and share cases via a multidisciplinary cancer conference (tumor board) to develop the best treatment plan for individual patient needs.
In addition to the physician experts listed above, your team will also include a patient navigator, a registered nurse, who will help you navigate the medical system and assist you will with your healthcare needs.
