Nurses lead the charge for health and wellness
To continue our Nurse’s Week celebration in conjunction with National Nursing Home Week, today we are featuring one of our Nursing Home nurses, Dawna Berry RN,RAC-CT, at Sentara Life Care and one of our Medical Group Nurses, James Whiting, BSN, RN, SMG Cardiology Specialists in Fort Norfolk.
We asked both Dawna and James to think about this years’ National Nurses Week theme: "Nursing: the Balance of Mind, Body and Spirit,” and explain how they are helping to lead the charge for health and wellness. Check out what they had to say.
Dawna Berry RN, RAC-CT
Nurses are challenged physically, mentally, and spiritually every day. We work schedules that our family and friends do not understand or appreciate. The work is both physically and mentally challenging and we go home feeling exhausted. How can we care for our patients, our families and each other if we don’t care for ourselves? It is easy to burn out, I feel certain that we have all been there. I encourage all of you to take care of yourselves so that you can be an example to your patients about a life of wellness and peace. It has taken me a long time to find that balance- it’s not easy. We take our work home. All the emotions of the day weigh heavy on our hearts and minds. I have learned (the hard way!) to carve out some time for myself. Take the time to grow in your career, read a book, relax on the patio, take the nap, get the massage, eat dessert and take your vacations! You have earned your time off so take it.
James Whiting, BSN, RN
I provide individualized care for every patient I see and I try to treat each patient with the highest level of care and compassion possible. I encourage healthy lifestyle habits and provide education and instruction to patients about health and wellness topics to best suit each patient’s needs. Taking a thorough approach to each encounter I have ensures safety, quality, and satisfaction for both patients and for other team members. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and experience to be the best nurse I can be and to lead the way with Sentara towards a healthful future for patients and team members.
