Sentara Leigh Hospital receives Magnet designation
Excited voices could be heard echoing the halls at Sentara Leigh Hospital as it received confirmation of its Magnet Recognition Program® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The designation, granted to about 7 percent of U.S. hospitals, culminates a multi-year journey toward recognition for excellence in patient care, innovation in nursing practice and a supportive work environment for nurses.
“We are so proud of the care we provide to our community and a hard-earned recognition like Magnet is a testament to our commitment,” said Jennifer Kreiser, nurse executive at Sentara Leigh Hospital. “I am thrilled and have never been more appreciative of our nursing team than I am today.”
Hospitals applying for Magnet recognition first file more than 500 pages of reports documenting that they are already meeting 88 quality measures ranging from falls with injuries to hospital-acquired infections and skin breakdown. If the hospitals meet those criteria, a three-day site visit validates the documentation while nursing team members are interviewed for their clinical expertise and knowledge of the process. Finally, a commission reviews the findings and votes on whether to admit the applicant as a Magnet hospital.
“We continually work to improve the care we provide. Through the process of pursuing our Magnet designation, we’ve elevated our nursing practices and united even more collaboratively for our patients,” said Teresa Edwards, president at Sentara Leigh Hospital. “We’re proud to join our Sentara sister hospitals in this achievement, and I’m proud of our entire team here at Sentara Leigh for their dedication to quality and creating an extraordinary patient experience.”
Sentara Leigh Hospital is the fifth Sentara hospital to receive Magnet recognition. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Sentara RMH Medical Center were recognized in 2014. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville received theirs in 2006 and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital received its in 2008. Other Sentara hospitals are also on the journey to Magnet Excellence®.
