As we celebrate Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center’s 45th birthday, we’re feeling the love! That being said, we have a number of Sentara Sweethearts right here in the hospital. We asked them to share their stories.

Marilou “LouLou” Marcelo, Guest Services:

Who is your significant other? My husband & soulmate, Wilfredo “Willy” Marcelo

What department do you work in? What department does your significant other work in? I work in Guest Services. Willy works in the mailroom/materials management department.

How long have you been together? 30 years

How did you meet? We met in the Philippines and have known each other since we were young.

How did you both wind up working here? One of my best friends started to work here and she told me about how great it was, how it was a wonderful job with benefits & how everyone was so nice!

What’s the best part about working at the same location/for the same company as a couple? It’s wonderful. It’s very convenient for us because we live 10 minutes away, there are good people here and there are very good benefits.

Is there a bad part with working at the same location/for the same company as a couple? In our case, there’s no problem because we’re both excited to see each other if we get a chance, but we’re dedicated to our jobs. Once we clock in, we’re here to work and do the right thing. We do the best to make this company better and are proud that we are both part of the community.

What advice would you offer other couples, especially couples who work together? My advice for other couples is to do what they can for Sentara: protect them, support our patients, visitors and employees. Enjoy working with your soulmate and the community, because for both of us, this is home sweet home. I love my job. Thank you Sentara for everything!

Sandy Flores, Guest Services- Language Services:

Who is your significant other? Jose A Flores

What department do you work in?  Guest Services, Language Services

What department does your significant other work in? Food Services

How long have you been together? 22 years

How did you meet? We have known each other since our teenage years

How did you both wind up working here?  I started employment here back in 2001 and in 2007 there was a need for a Sous Chef position- my husband was interviewed and hired.

What’s the best part about working at the same location/for the same company as a couple?
In my experience, I get to spend more time with my other half. Many couples are not afforded enough time to spend with one another so working in the same place allows couples to be much more present in each other’s lives for example, little lunch dates or even popping in to say hello….just the little things! It’s nice to say we both work for Sentara.     Also, some couples benefit from commuting together!

Is there a bad part with working at the same location/for the same company as a couple? There is not a diverse benefit plan/ package to choose from for married couples.

What advice would you offer other couples, especially couples who work together? Couples may feel like they don’t have a break from each other or are not separated long enough to miss their other half, so it is very important to take time for yourself (“ME TIME”) this can provide a good sense of balance in both areas of your life.

Kenneth Jones, Chaplain Department:

Who is your significant other?  Mary Jones

What department do you work in? What department does your significant other work in? We both work in the Chaplain Department

How long have you been together? 19 years

How did you meet? We met in the military, both serving in the Army.

How did you both wind up working here?  Pursuing Chaplain training and now we are working together as chaplains.

What’s the best part about working at the same location/for the same company as a couple? Sometimes we can work together at the same time pursuing a passion we both desire.

Is there a bad part with working at the same location/for the same company as a couple?
None that I can think of.

What advice would you offer other couples, especially couples who work together?
Enjoy the opportunity to work together and that you are both doing something and pursuing together.

We drive here together and share similar experiences.

Is there a bad part with working at the same location/for the same company as a couple?
