Mammography beginning at age 40 offers the best chance of detecting an early breast cancer. However, you should discuss your individual risk with your physician to decide what timing is right for you.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital offers a free breast health screening twice a year for women who:

  • Don't have insurance that covers mammograms and for whom cost is a concern
  • Are 40 or older
  • Have not had a mammogram for over a year, or have never had one.

Clinical breast exam

Clinical breast exams should be part of a periodic health exam - about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over.

Breast awareness and breast self-exam

Women should know how their breasts normally feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care providers. Breast self-exams are an option for women starting in their 20s.
