In fact, with the processes in place now, most patients are able to be seen in 15 minutes or less at both emergency department locations.

Despite the improved times, doctors say the care patients receive is not compromised. In fact, patients receive better care when they are seen sooner. For example, there are very specific diseases that are time dependent, one of which is a heart attack. In addition, there are other factors that make time critical, including infections and dehydration. It is in the patient’s best interest that we administer antibiotics or fluids quickly in those cases so that we can complete their treatment for their other illnesses or injuries.

To further streamline the process, the doctors and nurses work closely with the EMS squads. For patients coming in by ambulance, the squads call in and inform the ED staff of the situation so they know what to expect and how to prepare.

For lower-acuity patients, Sentara Martha Jefferson Emergency Services has implemented its ED Direct program. Based on the initial assessment of the triage nurse a patient sees when they come in, they may go directly to the ED Direct area where patients will receive your care from the same professional emergency department staff that they already trust, but in a way that moves them more quickly through the system without compromising the quality that they expect.
