Muga Scan

A Muga scan is used to show how efficiently a person’s heart functions.

How is a Muga scan performed?

An IV will be started by the technologist and some blood will be drawn. This blood will be “tagged” with a small amount of radioactivity while you wait. This tagging process takes about 30 minutes. Your blood is then given back to you through the IV. There are no side effects from this radioactivity.
The technologist will then walk you to the scan room. You will lay on a camera bed while a series of three images are taken. These images will also take about thirty minutes. Total time for the procedure is about one hour.
