Patient Information

Sentara Martha Jefferson is in full accordance with the strict guidelines as set forth by the American College of Radiology, and all of our mammography technologists are certified by the American Registry of Radiation Technologists. Always keeping your safety in mind, our mammogram machines use the lowest doses of radiation possible, while still providing excellent mammography imaging.

We have all female technicians, who are specially trained in mammography and are able to answer any questions you may have. Your mammogram X-rays will be interpreted by a board-certified radiologist. Within a seven to 10 business days, the results are sent back to you and your doctor.

If you choose to have your mammogram at one of our two convenient cutpatient care centers, you may also choose to get tested for osteoporosis during the same visit. Remember to call at least a week in advance of when you wish to have your next mammogram. We'll call you the day before to remind you of your appointment.

Preparing for your Mammogram

Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of your exam as they can appear as calcium spots on your mammogram.

Please be sure to describe any breast symptoms or problems to the technologist performing the exam. If you have had previous mammograms at another location, please be sure to bring your past images with you so that the radiologist can compare them successfully. If you'd rather, Martha Jefferson is happy to obtain any past images for you. Please complete the Release Form and fax to 434-982-8584 or mail to the address indicated on the form at least two weeks prior to your scheduled mammogram.
