Cognitive Rehabilitation Clinic
For people who have suffered a major brain injury, it often takes time to build back up memory and function. While it is possible to get back into a routine, there is no denying it takes some work. The Sentara Martha Jefferson Cognitive Rehabilitation Clinic helps patients do just that.
This multi-disciplinary clinic provides all the care needed for patients with cognitive problems under one roof.
Expert physicians evaluate patients with a number of disorders, including:
- Cognitive and memory dysfunction
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Vascular dementia
- Dementia associated with Parkinsonism
- Normal pressure hydrocephalus
- Dementia due to other causes
Following evaluation and diagnosis, our rehabilitation specialists will complete a functional assessment of the patient and work with the neurologist to ensure the best plan of care.
Follow up may include:
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Home safety evaluations
- Fall risk evaluation
Physical and occupational therapy are particularly important in this clinic, as research has shown that the more engaged and the more the brain is stimulated, the better the recovery. In the cognitive rehabilitation program, patients meet with their speech or occupational therapist for an hour, they then spend several more hours with a technician continuing to re-train their brain to do a number of household functions, including financial organization and planning, map reading, working with applications on the iPhone and practicing their balance on the Wii. All of these activities help our patients lead as full, active lives as possible, despite the cognitive deficits their disorders may have left them with.
