About Palliative Care

At Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, our palliative care team considers the whole person, understanding that the reduction or elimination of unpleasant symptoms can be vital to a patient's enjoyment of everyday life.

Delivered in conjunction with curative therapies and in partnership with a patient's primary physician, palliative care may assist with:

  • Expert symptom assessment and management
  • Determining goals of care and decision making
  • Practical support for patients and their family caregivers
  • Facilitation of effectively coordinated continuity of care to address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those facing a life-changing illness

The palliative care team includes two experienced nurse practitioners, a chaplain, a social worker, a nurse and a massage therapist. Working together, they provide palliative care support to patients and their families.

Ask your primary physician if you would like a referral for a palliative care consultation.
