With any procedure, it is important to understand the implications for your health and your life. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital firmly believes in the importance of education, which is why we make sure our patients are informed about weight-loss surgery and what each operation entails.
Before the surgery, our patients must attend a free seminar, "About Bariatric Surgery," in which they will learn is weight loss surgery is right for them, what it entails and how to get started.
To help ensure our patients' success, we provide ongoing education and support as well, including a Bariatric Support Group and classes tailored to Bariatric patients' needs.
Following bariatric surgery, it is important to participate in activities that provide continued support, encouragement and education. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital offers a free support group that provides just that. It is facilitated by registered dietitians and occasionally a bariatric surgeon. Topics include nutrition, exercise and emotional concerns.
The group meets twice a month, and patients who cannot make it in person are encouraged to call in. Registration is not required. For more information, call 434-654-7009 or 1-888-652-6663.
We also encourage our post-operative patients to join our private Sentara Martha Jefferson Bariatric Support Group Facebook page, which provides additional encouragement, education, and support for our post-op patients.
