We all know that life can be fragile. At any point, any one of us could end up in a trauma center in need of life-saving measures. While Sentara has historically provided high-quality care across Virginia, we recognize the need for continued advancement in the services we provide to our communities and remain dedicated to enhancing our level of health care. That's why we are proud to announce the provisional level III trauma designation by the Virginia Department of Health for our Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center location. After the provisional year, a follow-up site review will be conducted to evaluate the hospital for full Level III designation.

What is a level III trauma center?

A level III trauma center provides prompt assessment, management, surgery and stabilization for trauma patients. Our experienced team is dedicated to delivering immediate, life-saving care to individuals with serious injuries. In addition, we offer a full continuum of care and support throughout the recovery process.

Key components of our level III trauma centers include:

  • 24-hour access to emergency medicine physicians
  • Availability of trauma surgeons and trauma orthopedic surgeons
  • Quality assessment and improvement programs
  • Agreements to transfer patients requiring a higher level of care
  • Access to regional level I trauma and burn center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital via Nightingale Air Ambulance, if required

Types of injuries needing trauma care

All Sentara emergency departments are equipped to handle anything from sprained ankles to heart attacks and strokes. Our trauma centers, however, are equipped to provide a higher level of emergency care known as trauma care, focusing on cases where there may be an issue of immediate survival.

Paramedics and first responders often make the decision regarding where an injured person will be taken after evaluation.

Examples of severe injuries we can now treat that may need trauma care:

  • Serious car crash injuries
  • Serious falls
  • Blunt trauma (being struck by an object)
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Gunshot wounds
  • Stab wounds

It's important to remember, in any life-threatening emergency, call 911. If you are unsure whether your injury requires a trip to the emergency room or a trauma center, the paramedic will decide your best option for care.
