Sentara Family Medicine Provider Delivers Care to Patients of All Ages
“I always knew I wanted to be a nurse and help others be healthy,” says Genevieve Bennett, nurse practitioner. “But when my son was born with an autoimmune disorder, I realized I wanted to take my training to the next level. As a nurse practitioner, I can provide a higher level of care—over the course of a lifetime—to families like mine.”
Bennett, a nurse practitioner with Sentara Family & Internal Medicine Physicians, provides ongoing care for generations of family members. She sees patients of all ages with every type of need, from earaches to heart disease.
Primary Care: Caring for the Person, Not the Illness
Bennett focuses on prevention. She encourages vaccinations, routine exams and good nutrition to help people stay healthy and avoid illnesses.
She strives to treat the whole patient, not just their health concerns. “I never think of my patients in terms of the condition they see me for,” says Bennett. “I think about their overall wellness and try to help them feel their best and achieve their health goals.” Bennett believes looking at the big picture helps her deliver better care. “For example, if a patient has frequent colds, I might look at their lifestyle and other symptoms and investigate whether allergies or asthma are contributing to the symptoms.”
In the Williamsburg practice, she offers routine healthcare services, including:
- Well visits and physical exams
- School and sport physicals
- Vaccinations
- Pelvic exams, Pap tests and breast exams
- Health maintenance, including blood pressure readings
Convenient Family Medicine Services in Williamsburg
Bennett collaborates with a team of healthcare providers who work together to ensure patients don’t have to wait for care, especially when they are sick or injured. “We are very responsive to patients’ needs,” says Bennett. “We offer same-day sick visits, so people can receive care promptly and in a location that is convenient to work or home.”
Patients can also securely receive care with an eVisit through Sentara MyChart. Bennett is able to confirm medical conditions, determine a treatment plan and submit prescriptions to the patient’s pharmacy all without an office visit.
Bennett also provides ongoing care for chronic conditions, including:
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Depression
- Diabetes and related conditions
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- COPD
“I realized with my son that it is so important to have a healthcare advocate,” says Bennett. “As a parent, I am on the ball, watching for telltale signs of illness. I use the same approach with my patients—I’m always looking at the big picture to make sure we’re not missing anything.”
Bennett enjoys getting to know her patients on a personal level because she expects to be their provider for years. When not working, she spends time with her husband, two children and dog. They enjoy hiking, soccer and swimming.
