LaShawna B. Heflin, NP-C
Sentara Internal Medicine Physicians
Nurse practitioner LaShawna Heflin has been working with patients since 2000. She draws on her many years of nursing experience when caring for her patients. “I was a registered nurse before I obtained my practitioner degree,” says Heflin, a provider at Sentara Internal Medicine Physicians in Woodbridge. “I approach each patient with compassion. My goal is to help them understand their diagnosis and what steps they need to take to improve their health.”
Heflin enjoys being a nurse practitioner because it allows her to provide an extra level of care for her patients. She develops long-term relationships with people by serving as their primary care provider. Heflin emphasizes prevention, offering:
- Well visits
- Prostate exams
- Women’s health exams, including Pap tests
- Lipid screenings
- Diabetes screenings
- Management of chronic conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure
“It’s rewarding to see patients get better and thrive,” says Heflin. “I enjoy connecting with people, so they understand what they need to do to manage chronic conditions and improve their health.”
Patients at Sentara Internal Medicine Physicians Benefit from a Team Approach to Care
At Sentara Internal Medicine Physicians, Heflin works closely with a team of physicians. “We deliver prompt care to patients, working together to see people when it’s convenient for them.” She even offers same-day appointments.
Heflin’s goal is to provide her patients with the care that is right for them. If a person requires specialized help, Heflin collaborates with a team of specialists, including:
- Vascular specialists
Driven by a Passion for Service
Heflin’s spouse serves in the military. After moving around for several years, they are in the final years of service and looking forward to settling in Lorton. Along with their 9-year-old son, the family enjoys the outdoors and biking together.
In her spare time, Heflin helps out at her son’s taekwondo studio. She has recently started teaching diabetes awareness classes in conjunction with the Coalition of 100 Black Women in Prince William’s County. “It’s important to me to give back to the community,” says Heflin.
LaShawna Heflin is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She received her nurse practitioner degree from Tennessee State University. She is currently accepting new patients at Sentara Internal Medicine Physicians, located at 2280 Opitz Blvd., Suite 250, Woodbridge, Va.
