Family Medicine
"Science has fascinated me since I was a child," says family medicine physician Tyler Pittman. "Research was appealing, but I found I wanted to work directly with people. Family medicine lets me treat people of all ages, often from the same family. I enjoy developing long-term relationships focused on health."
A Generalist With an Interest in Type 1 Diabetes
Dr. Pittman joined Sentara Family Medicine Physicians in Elizabeth City. He cares for people of all ages, from newborns to centenarians. He offers primary care services, including:
- Annual physical exams
- School and sports physicals
- Suturing (stitches) and wound care
- Vaccinations
While he offers general primary care services, he has a strong interest in helping people manage chronic conditions, particularly diabetes.
"Being a family medicine provider allows me to gain special expertise in areas that interest me, and Type 1 diabetes is one of them," says Dr. Pittman. "Most of my patients can avoid an extra trip to their endocrinologist because I keep up to date on pumps, insulin and the latest therapies."
Dr. Pittman has spent the past six years working at summer camps that cater to kids and teens with Type 1 diabetes.
Educating Patients Improves Health
Dr. Pittman finds he can accomplish more when he takes time to teach patients about all health matters.
"I make sure my patients know what they need to do and why it's important," he says. "My approach is to coach, not lecture. I encourage people to make the healthiest choices and ensure they know the benefits of those choices."
Dr. Pittman listens intently to understand his patients' concerns. Together, they explore options and identify the solution that will work best for each individual.
"I get a lot of satisfaction when I see someone work toward and accomplish the goal we set together," says Dr. Pittman. "Helping people improve their health is so rewarding."
