He has contributed more than 35 articles and abstracts to the literature and won the Hume Award for best paper from the Virginia Surgical Society for his personal series of pancreatic resections. In 2005, Dr. Hoefer developed a Peritoneal Surface Malignancy program at Sentara CarePlex Hospital and since then has performed more than 110 Cytoreductive surgeries with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). Additionally, Dr. Hoefer helped develop the intraoperative radiation program at Sentara CarePlex Hospital, participating the the Targit A International Trial as well as the Targit R trial, both of which have been published.
Dr. Hoefer earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by general surgery internship and residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
