Sentara autonomic testing lab one of few in country
Sentara recently opened a full-service autonomic testing lab – joining only a handful of providers in the country offering this specialized service.
The autonomic nervous system – also known as ANS – affects such functions as heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, perspiration and even dilation of the pupils.
Autonomic testing helps determine how well the body is regulating blood pressure and heart rate, and sometimes other involuntary functions of the ANS. One of the key elements that will set the Sentara Autonomic Lab apart from many others is the addition of thermoregulatory sweat testing, or TST. TST is performed in a temperature and humidity controlled sauna-like chamber. The patient lies on a table and is covered with a chemical powder that changes color in the presence of moisture, such as sweat.
