Orthopedics team receives Sentara CEO award
Sentara RMH Orthopedic Services is pleased to be the recipient of a 2014 Sentara CEO Award.
The CEO Award is the highest form of recognition a project can receive within Sentara, said Howard Kern, president and COO of Sentara, and vice chair of the Sentara RMH Board of Directors. Kern presented the award to Gina Lambert, the joint and spine program team leader at the January board of directors meeting.
“The purpose of the award is to recognize teams that have overcome significant barriers to achieve dramatic improvements in cost savings, revenue growth, quality, service or throughput,” Kern said. “The projects and team members selected for this honor are held in high regard and serve as role models for the entire Sentara family.”
The Sentara RMH orthopedic service line received the award under the cost savings and revenue enhancement category. In 2010, Sentara RMH led the Sentara system by initiating the first orthopedic-organized joint program. In 2011, Hampton Roads coined the trademark Sentara OrthoJoint Center® and by 2014 the Sentara system included nine Sentara OrthoJoint Center locations.
Lambert and her team redesigned the model of care for joint replacement patients, Kern noted. They developed clinical protocols and implemented the use of standardized, nationally proven best practices that produced significant results, including the following:
From 2011 to 2014, Sentara RMH reduced the length of stay for joint replacement patients by 24 percent, from 3.78 to 2.89 days;
Sentara RMH reduced blood transfusions by 80 percent, from 45.3 percent to 9.0 percent;
Sentara RMH significantly increased joint replacement volume from 179 cases in 2010 to 357 cases in 2014.
“I am very excited to accept the CEO Award on behalf of the entire Joint Team,” Lambert said. “The program’s success is a result of the commitment demonstrated by each team member who interacts with or provides care to our joint replacement patients. I’m honored to work with such a dedicated group of individuals.”
Five teams were awarded CEO Awards for 2014. Most are system-wide initiatives spanning across Sentara Healthcare.
