The health campus of Sentara RMH Medical Center was abloom April 3 with more than 700 pinwheels, planted there by Healthy Families of the Blue Ridge in recognition of the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about child abuse and how to prevent it. The pinwheel campaign occurs each year in April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Each year, volunteers plant about 4,000 pinwheels across the Commonwealth. As a well-known symbol of childhood, the pinwheels are expressions of health, safety and hope. They also represent the campaign’s efforts in support of the healthy development of all children, and a reminder that healthy childhood development is essential for the health of local communities and the nation.

“We are excited to have this event hosted at Sentara RMH for the first time,” said Brooke Garcia, BSW, team leader for Healthy Families of the Blue Ridge. “While the pinwheels make a beautiful addition to the hospital campus, it can remind people of the hope and happiness that every child deserves.”

According to the website of Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, the blue pinwheels should be seen as a sign that prevention works, rather than as symbols of children who have been victims of abuse or have died as a result of abuse or neglect. Instead, the Blue Ribbon, a symbol launched in Virginia, is used nationally to represent children who have suffered harm. Since 2008, the website says, more than 100,000 pinwheels have been planted throughout Virginia.

This is the first year the pinwheel garden has been planted at Sentara RMH Medical Center. For at least the past 10 years, the pinwheels have been planted on the lawn around the Courthouse in downtown Harrisonburg, according to Garcia. The Sentara RMH pinwheel garden will remain in place on the health campus through April 10.

Healthy Families of the Blue Ridge is a voluntary program within the Sentara RMH Community Health Department that helps new parents learn about how children develop, how to keep children healthy, and how to prepare children to do well in school.
