Hospice Helps Patients and Families Focus on Quality of Life
Sentara Hospice Services Reminds the Community that "It's about how you live!"
November is National Hospice Month and hospices across the country are reaching out to raise awareness. Hospice is not a place but rather high-quality care that enables patients and families to focus on living as fully as possible despite a life-limiting illness.
"Every year, nearly 1.4 million people living with a life-limiting illness receive care from hospices in this country," said Elizabeth Lee, Director of Sentara Hospice Services. "These highly-trained professionals ensure that patients and families find dignity, respect, and love during life's most difficult journey. Our dedication to high quality and compassionate hospice care is essential to improve the quality of life for loved ones with life-limiting illnesses and their families," said Lee. "Hospice care is a gift that our staff is honored to give to the people in our community."
Hospice programs provide pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support, and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible.
As Sandra Allen-Dansby, a hospice nurse at Sentara Hospice, noted, "I tell my patients that hospice isn't about concentrating on the last day because we don't know when that will be. Instead, we take every day as it comes and enjoy it to the fullest. It's about how you live!"
