Your Support System
Orthopedic Nurse Navigator
Unique to Sentara OrthoJoint Centers is the role of the orthopedic patient navigator. Orthopedic navigators serve as the primary contact for patients, guiding them throughout the process so they feel better prepared and comfortable once they depart the center. The guidance and support of an orthopedic navigator includes the following:
- Providing pre-surgery education and support.
- Reviewing what you’ll need at home after your surgery, including support, if required.
- Acting as your advocate throughout the course of treatment.
- Answering questions and coordinating your hospital care with the rest of the orthopedic team.
The therapy team plays an integral role in your recovery. You’ll meet with members of the team numerous times before and during and after your surgery. The therapy team guides group therapy sessions. They’ll also teach you how to correctly perform your postoperative exercises at home.
The Role of the Coach
If you’re considering surgery – or already have surgery scheduled – start thinking about who will be your coach throughout the process. Whether a friend or family member, your coach will be with you from the pre-surgery process through your stay in the hospital and discharge. This person will attend the preoperative education class, give support during exercise classes and keep you focused on healing.
