Frequently Asked Billing Questions

Below is a list of common questions about the hospital billing process. If your question is not answered below, please contact us.

  • What if I need financial assistance to pay my bill?

We want to reduce your financial worry as much as possible. Patient financial services representatives at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital can help you understand the billing and insurance process. They can also help you apply for financial assistance.

The Financial Assistance Program is based on the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital uses a sliding scale up to 225 percent of those guidelines.

  • How can I find out ahead of time what I may be charged?

You can download and view a list of common procedures (PDF).

Please keep in mind that this price does not include charges from anesthesiologists, radiologists, physicians and independent laboratories. You will be billed separately for those services. Remember, these are estimated charges, and charges may vary depending on the physician's order and actual services provided. If you have any questions, please call 434-517-3190.

  • Why did I receive more than one bill?

Your hospital bill covers services provided by the hospital. You will receive a separate bill from your physician, and you may also receive a bill for services provided by other professionals.

    Other practices may include:

    • Southside Emergency Physicians
    • Halifax Radiology Associates
    • Halifax Anesthesiology Associates
    • Dianon/Lab Corp

If you have questions about bills received from any of these sources, please contact them directly.

Note: The above list may not be all-inclusive.

  • Why am I getting a bill when I have not been in the hospital?

You may receive a bill from the hospital even though you were not a patient. If your doctor performed lab work or a biopsy for you in his office and sent it to the hospital for analysis, you will receive a bill for the service. You will also receive a bill from your doctor for his services.

    About lab work:

    • Your doctor should inform you that lab work will be sent out for analysis. Your doctor should provide billing information to the hospital.
    • Your insurance company may have a designated lab facility and will only pay for services at that facility. Be sure to check your policy.
    • If your insurance does not cover these services, the balance will be your responsibility.

If you have questions about your coverage, contact your health insurance company.

  • How can I pay my bill?

You may pay online, by phone or by mail.
