Joan Nusbaum has many things to be proud of: her beautiful family, her vibrant hometown of Norfolk and the transformation of our medical community into a nationally recognized system that brings people from all over the country to receive care. Little did Joan realize that she would one day need specialized cardiac care, and she wouldn’t have to look any further than her own hometown.
While on vacation with family in Oregon in 2008, Joan began to feel very weak. Her symptoms progressed quickly, and she was rushed to a local hospital as she went into heart failure. After spending over a month in the hospital, she was finally stabilized and strong enough to travel back home to continue her treatment. Luckily, Joan was able to receive advanced care at the Sentara Heart Hospital® with the help of cardiologist, Dr. Paul Mahoney.
“He saved my life,” says Joan of Dr. Mahoney. “I received the advanced care I needed without having to travel out of Norfolk.”
As a youthful 89-year-old, Joan lives independently and shares many stories of her celebrated life – including meeting Al Jolson and learning to golf from Sam Snead. But her source of joy is clearly her family. Joan beams when she describes each one and treasures the extra time she has been given.
For this reason, Joan has made contributing to the Sentara Heart program a priority. Through her generosity and the generosity of all our donors, Sentara Heart and the Sentara Heart Hospital® continue to provide cutting-edge advanced care to our community, and ranks nationally in cardiac services.
Your donations, like Joan’s, help advance the Sentara Heart program across Hampton Roads by supporting state-of-the-art care to your neighbors, family and loved ones.
