Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is 6th largest employer in Prince William County
As Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center has grown, so has the area it calls home.
In 1972, at the time of the hospital’s opening, the United States Census Bureau estimated more than 125,000 residents lived in Prince William County. In the most recent data, that population has grown to more than 455,000 residents. That being said, it should come as no surprise Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is the sixth largest employer in the county, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
When the hospital opened, it employed 115 people. Now, 45 years later, more than a thousand people work here. In 2016, Prince William County estimated Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center directly contributed almost $92 million to the economy through direct salary and benefits.
“Sentara is known for its high quality care for patients, but it’s also known as a wonderful place for its employees,” explains Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center President Kathie Johnson. “We have a wide range of employee benefits. Sentara has a policy of wanting to be very careful about hiring because they’ve never had a layoff, so we pride ourselves on job security and a very culturally diverse workplace that is very sensitive to the needs of our employees and community. It’s a great employer and we do bring a lot to the community. The majority of our employees actually live in this community, so we’re happy to be a part of it in that way, as well.”
The benefits don’t stop there, Sentara also gives back to the community. Sentara Healthcare has invested more than $120 million into the communities it serves since 2010. In 2016 alone, the annual charity care benefit was approximately $28 million.
“We absolutely serve everyone who walks through our doors. We never turn people away. If people have financial needs, we try to work with them to make sure those needs are met,” explains Johnson. “It’s part of our mission. We want everyone to get the care that they need, we do our absolute best to make sure that happens,” she adds.
In addition to providing care, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center and its employees are also heavily involved in the community. Whether it’s fundraising for organization like the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society or the United Way, employees are invested in the hospital’s neighborhoods. For example, recently employees have been involved in charitable giving for the United Way Campaign. And, it doesn’t stop there- those same employees rolled up their sleeves to help clean at a local, elderly man’s home as part of the organization’s Day of Caring with Project Mend-A-House. As it has been from the beginning, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is a hospital built by the community, for the community!
