Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC) has named Katherine A. Johnson, PhD, as its new president. Johnson joined Sentara Healthcare in June of this year as vice president and chief operating officer of SNVMC and in August assumed the day-to-day oversight of the hospital during the search for a new president. She will transition fulltime to her new role effective Dec. 5, 2016.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC) has named Katherine A. Johnson, PhD, as its new president. Johnson joined Sentara Healthcare in June of this year as vice president and chief operating officer of SNVMC and in August assumed the day-to-day oversight of the hospital during the search for a new president. She will transition fulltime to her new role effective Dec. 5, 2016.

“I am very proud and excited to have the opportunity to work with the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center team in my new role and I look forward to improving healthcare for the Northern Virginia community we serve,” said Johnson. 

SNVMC is a 183-bed, not-for-profit community hospital in Prince William County, Virginia. SNVMC's current service lines include primary care, emergency care, advanced imaging, cancer, diabetes, heart and vascular, orthopedics, urology, weight loss surgery, and women's services extending throughout Northern Virginia and the greater Fredericksburg region.

Prior to joining Sentara, Johnson spent eight years as president of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center in Thomasville, NC. Her career also included serving as a chief nursing officer and vice president for patient care services for Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, and vice president of patient care services for Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, NC. Other experiences include serving as a director of nursing, assistant director of nursing, clinical nursing supervisor, and nurse.

Johnson holds a BS in Nursing and MS in Adult Health Nursing/Nursing Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo, an MBA from the University of South Carolina, and a PhD in Healthcare Administration from Kennedy-Western University in Thousand Oaks, CA.
