Sentara Family Medicine Provider Delivers Care With Southern Flair
Amy C. Harrelson, PA-C
Sentara Internal Medicine Physicians
Internal Medicine, Physician Assistant
“I grew up in the South where the pace of life was slower,” says Amy Harrelson, PA-C. “My medical care wasn’t rushed. I always felt that my providers took their time and heard my concerns. I aim to deliver that same kind of care to my patients.”
As a Sentara Medical Group physician assistant, Harrelson extends simple courtesies to her patients. “My parents taught me to use good manners, and that helped me develop a bedside manner that patients appreciate. Simple things matter: using eye contact, saying please and thank you and addressing patients respectfully. Even though I’m no longer in Georgia, I’ve held on to those traits that set care apart.”
Providing Primary Care Services to Patients
“I want to make patients feel like I heard and understood them and that their concerns are valid,” says Harrelson. “It is gratifying to see my patients make progress and feel better.”
Patient health is her No. 1 priority. Harrelson tries to find solutions to any concerns patients have, to help put them at ease. She sees patients ages 1 to 101 with every type of need, from routine to complex. She provides:
- Well visits and same-day sick visits
- Health maintenance, including blood pressure readings, Pap tests and breast exams
- Disease management, including management of diabetes, heart disease and COPD
“I chose to become a family medicine PA after shadowing one. I saw how she was able to spend the time needed to help people feel better and make positive lifestyle changes,” says Harrelson. “I enjoy family medicine because there is a lot of variety; I can see kids and adults with a range of needs.”
