You choose: Direct access to physical therapy
A new industry term – direct access –has cropped up, leaving some people wondering: What does it mean?
Direct access means that you can access physical therapy directly without a physician referral.
When would you use direct access? Some common reasons are low-back pain, stiff neck, joint pain or muscle aches that limit your ability to perform daily activities such as jogging, biking, gardening or simply walking on the beach.
How does direct access work? It’s simple. All you need to do is contact your nearest Sentara Therapy Center for an initial evaluation. Your physical therapist will take a detailed history and perform a thorough examination to determine if you can benefit from physical therapy.
One of the most common concerns is cost. While most insurance companies cover direct access to physical therapy, the Sentara Therapy Center office can help inform you of your individual benefits.
Another common concern is that physical therapy won’t help. Know that if your condition falls outside of the scope of what physical therapy can address, your therapist will refer you to a more appropriate provider.
Direct access gets you quick access to health care and on the road to recovery faster. This way you can get back to sports, playing with your kids or simply doing everyday tasks without pain or limitations.
