Sentara Leigh Hospital is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by DNV. DNV's stroke certification programs incorporate elements from our NIAHO® hospital accreditation standards, as well as requirements from the Guidelines of the Brain Attack Coalition, and Recommendations of the American Stroke Association.

The emphasis these programs place on deploying a disciplined management system, combined with the relevant clinical best practices, sets DNV stroke certifications apart from other programs. This distinction is awarded when a hospital meets national standards and guidelines for improving clinical outcomes for stroke patients and exercises critical elements for long-term success in improving outcomes.

Emergency room physicians work with neurologists and an interventional neuroradiologist, board-certified and specialty trained in neurovascular disease, to quickly assess and treat acute stroke symptoms and emergency neurology care. Improved quality outcomes due to accurate and speedy assessments, and administering of tPA treatment on ischemic attacks can result in minimizing neurological damage and mortality risks - in effect preserving proper nervous system functions.
