The Sentara Norfolk General Hospital stroke program has received certification from DNV GL Healthcare as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, reflecting the highest level of competence for treatment of serious stroke events.
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification with notable survey results from DNV GL Healthcare, highlighting the exceptional patient care by the Sentara team of physicians and clinicians.
Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that the medical center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.
In order for the certification to remain in place, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital must maintain our exceptional efforts for stroke patient care and community education.
Emergency room physician’s work with neurologists who are board-certified and specialty trained in neurovascular disease to quickly assess and treat acute stroke symptoms and emergency neurology care. Improved quality outcomes due to accurate and speedy assessments, and administering of tPA treatment on ischemic attacks can result in minimizing neurological damage and mortality risks- in effect preserving proper nervous system functions.
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital has 8 Neuro ICU beds and 2 dedicated stroke units (70 beds) staffed by registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN) specially-trained in stroke care.
