Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Eastern Virginia Medical School evaluate sleep-related problems like sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless leg syndrome, and more. In addition to our sleep evaluations, the sleep center conducts research through ongoing studies, including drug trials, to create pioneering advances and treatments.
As a part of the study a driving simulator test is conducted for patients with a variety of symptoms related to driving difficulty and excessive daytime sleepiness. The tests evaluate the driver's ability to perform on the road. Comparing normal drivers to those with possible driving problems helps to determine the degree of risk while driving. The driving simulator test is conducted in a room near the sleep lab with monitors attached to the patient.
