Diabetes education is offered at many Sentara sites. Patients can attend both group classes and individual sessions.
Group classes are designed to help patients and their families learn the beginning skills needed to live successfully with diabetes. We encourage you to bring a family member or friend with you.
What will you learn about in group classes?
- Diabetes overview
- Healthy eating
- Adding physical activity into your lifestyle
- Blood sugar monitoring
- Complications of diabetes
- Sick day management
- Regular tests needed for diabetes
Individual sessions are also available for people who prefer learning in a more private, personalized setting, or have special learning needs. We offer a variety of topics in individual sessions, such as:
- Carbohydrate counting
- Insulin starts
- Insulin pump starts
- Blood glucose meter training
- Meal planning
Some patients may benefit from attending both group classes and individual sessions.
Please print the diabetes self-management training form and bring it with you to your first class. Also, visit Patient Information to view physician order forms that may be required for insurance coverage.
