Our Multidisciplinary Brain Tumor Specialists

Throughout the process, our specialists guide you and your loved ones from diagnosis through treatment to recovery. If you have a brain tumor, you may work with one or more of the following specialists:

  • Neurosurgeons diagnose and surgically remove or treat brain tumors. The surgeon reviews your brain scans and removes the tumor surgically, if possible.
  • Medical oncologists treat cancerous brain tumors with chemotherapy or biologic therapies. This physician chooses the best drug for your individual condition and calculates its dosage based on the tumor type and your overall health.
  • Radiation oncologists treat tumors with radiation therapies. We sometimes use radiation therapies as alternatives to surgery, but we often use them in combination with surgery. Your team will consider all the options and, with your input, decide what the best route is for you.
  • Pathologists diagnose brain tumors and cancers from biopsy samples. In these cases, your neurosurgeon can surgically remove a small piece of the tumor. Then our pathologist examines the tissue sample under the microscope or tests it with chemicals to confirm a diagnosis. Sometimes the pathologist joins the surgeon in the operating room to make a diagnosis during the biopsy procedure.
  • Neuroradiologists use advanced imaging technologies to diagnose brain tumors. These physicians are specialists in interpreting scans of the nervous system and mapping the brain. They help diagnose tumors and help surgeons plan the best routes to the tumors. Your radiologist can pinpoint where the tumor is and what parts of the brain it may be affecting by analyzing 2-D and 3-D images of your brain.
  • Endocrinologists diagnose and treat problems of the endocrine system—the system that produces and regulates hormones in your body. They can help diagnose and treat pituitary tumors and other brain tumors that affect your endocrine system.
