Hospital bed donated to Virginia Zoo
The mission of Sentara Healthcare, to improve health every day, usually applies to humans. However, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is broadening the mandate by donating a hospital bed to the Animal Wellness Campus of the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk.
“We can use this bed for a variety of procedures,” said Amanda Guthrie, DVM, veterinarian for theVirginia Zoo. “We often have animals under anesthesia for routine care and other procedures and this bed will make it easier for us to transport them.” The motorized bed can accommodate animals up to 500 pounds.
The Animal Wellness Campus includes a new $18 million facility with state-of-the-art procedure rooms that will allow public viewing of veterinary procedures as they are being performed, through a glass wall.
“We’re excited to learn how our donation will be used,” said Tracey Kane, RN, patient care supervisor at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. “It’s gratifying to include the zoo animals’ health in our mission.”
“This bed will help the Virginia Zoo provide the best possible health care for our animals,” said Greg Bockheim, the Zoo’s executive director. “We’re very grateful for their donation.”
