Revolutionary, new heart technology comes to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center
An exciting new innovation for heart health is happening at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.
Electrophysiologists performed the first Micra Pacemaker implant at the Sentara Heart & Vascular Center at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, two weeks ago. This technology was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in April 2016, which makes it groundbreaking for patients and doctors, alike.
“It’s a miniaturized device containing revolutionary, new technology,” explains Electrophysiologist, Dr. Aysah Arshad, “It’s delivered directly into the heart and cosmetically appealing, since there’s no scar, and it’s as small as a vitamin pill.”
The Micra pacemaker is the world’s smallest pacemaker. Micra is implanted directly into the heart. Since it is implanted through a vein in the leg, there is no chest incision, scar or bump.
Dr. Arshad has conducted four of these procedures as of November 7th, “This procedure is uncommon and right now, only covered for Medicare patients. It’s ideal for patients who need single chamber pacing or who have had prior infections.”
With a traditional pacemaker, the apparatus is placed under the skin and then leads go into the heart, with the Micra technology, this doesn’t happen. This reduces the risk of complications related to the wires and incisions. For most patients, the smaller design, coupled with a self-contained, less invasive technique, translates to fewer medical complication and fewer post-implant restrictions.
“This new technology offers Sentara Heart & Vascular Center patients a very short procedure duration with a quick post-op recovery,” explains Dr. Arshad. “Usually recovery is overnight and there’s no prolonged movement restrictions for four weeks, like a tradition pacemaker. That means patients can return to their normal lives quicker.”
Congratulations to Drs. Aysah Arshad, Mohammed Ghazvini and the entire Sentara Heart & Vascular Center team for continuing to advance the care we provide to our community at the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.
